How to fix Stuttering and FPS Drops

Valheim stutters and FPS drops – Is Valheim stuttering for you? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here’s what you can do about it.

How to fix stuttering and FPS drops in Valheim

Valheim was released on Steam as an Early Access game, and so far it’s going great. It’s one of those games that came out of nowhere. It’s approaching 150,000 concurrent players per day. If you look at the graphics on Steam right now, you’ll definitely put it in the top spot. It’s an open-world online game, and players are enjoying every part of it.

That said, Valheim has some performance issues. Looking at the game, you would think it would be very easy. It isn’t. Yes, the game may not look that demanding, but it does require a GTX 970.

This means that players with a better graphics card than the GTX 970 can play this game at the best settings and with a high FPS, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case. People with much better GPUs than the GTX 970 also experience constant stuttering and fps drops.

In Valheim, there is constant stuttering and declining SPF.

Here is a message from the user of Steam /Drow-sy :

So I have a constant stuttering of FPS and big drops in FPS. Normally this doesn’t happen in any other game, and if you change the settings (even if you set them to low and turn everything off), you still get these severe stutters/drops in FPS. For reference, I can play Death-Stranding with full raytracing and the highest settings at 1080p 60fps without any problem. I can also run Doom Eternal on high/ultra settings.

My equipment:

-RTX 2070 (dual fan)-i7-6700k-16gb RAM

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have already tried:

-Optimize the Nvidia control panel
settings -My
drivers are updated for my GPU, I use Geforce Experience to do this -Check whether there is a risk of
thermal strangulation
, my hardware does not strangle (and yes, I know the CPU nodes off my GPU, but it should not cause these problems).

Unfortunately, I need Vsync because I have a TV that only works in 1080p at 60 Hz. I know it’s not that great, but maybe that’s the solution to the problem?

As you can see, a user of the RTX 2070 in Walheim is also experiencing performance problems. The question now is whether there is a solution.

Addressing stuttering and low EPS problems

First of all, make sure you have taken all the obvious small steps you need to take in case of a performance problem. Update drivers, check the game on Steam, etc. I can list all these things here if you want. Let me know in the “Comments” section below.

Now let’s look at the corrections suggested by another Steam /flipmode user. Here’s what he recommends:

Have you tried using fast vsync through the nvidia panel?

Game synchronization is “classic,” meaning that any drop below 60 frames per second is replaced with 30 frames per second.
Since the frame rate seems to vary a lot in the
game, this leads to constant changes.

Adaptive synchronization with the Nvidia panel already helps, but leaves many gaps due to the same problem.

Fast Vsync seems to work best for me.

(Note that after changing the nvidia panel, the parameter in the game is no longer relevant).

I don’t understand what he is trying to say? He is asking you to change the vertical sync settings in the Nvidia control panel.

  1. Just open the Nvidia control panel.
  2. Select “Manage 3D Settings” on the left.
  3. Scroll to the end
  4. Find the Vertical Sync setting and change it to Fast.

Try it out, and if it works for you, let everyone know in the comments below.

These are all the corrections we have now for people for whom Valheim stutters. I will be adding more soon. Click here to visit the Valheim Steam discussion page and see what others have to say about it.

That’s it, folks!
