The PS5 is a great console that offers a great next-generation gaming experience, and it will likely only get better as new games are added to the lineup. Indeed, the PS5 has proven to be powerful, efficient and well designed. For some environments, however, it can be too massive. A few problems prevent it from being a five-star product at launch, but it is a nice improvement over the PS4 and an exciting portal into next-generation gameplay.

As soon as the console was officially released, it was clear that the PS5 is a huge console. The dimensions of the PS5 disc edition (width x height x depth) are 390mm x 104mm x 260mm respectively. The PS5 is deeper and taller than the Xbox Series X.
It is white or egg white in color. It has a sandwich design with white panels on the outside that are matte, while the center of the console has a smooth black surface that can easily become a magnet for fingerprints. The PS5 is quite heavy, weighing about 4.5 kg.
The front panel of the PS5 contains a C-type USB port for connecting and charging controllers. It contains an A-type USB port, a power button and an eject button (available on disc versions). On the back of the PS5 is an Ethernet port, a place to plug in the power cord, two USB Type A ports and an HDMI port. The console is powered only by its internal power supply.
There is also an internal slot for a second M.2 type SSD, but memory expansion is not supported at the time of output. However, access to the internal slot is quite easy.
Initial setup was easy. All you need is the included power cord and HDMI cable. If you have an Ethernet cable, you can do this during installation. It can also be connected to Wi-Fi interchangeably. Sony modified the power supply and cooling system with a liquid metal thermal interface material and a special heat sink to solve the problem of overheating.

The PS5 innovation is based on the old Sony consoles. Therefore, it may take a few minutes for you to get used to some of the new controls. For example, if you hold down the PlayStation button on the controller, a shortcut menu does not appear. Instead, a new control center appears.
It works in the same way as the shortcut menu and allows you to view various submenus, such as your friends list, notifications, current downloads and whether your Spotify account is linked.
One of the attractive new features is the PS5 maps, with the largest activity maps. The cards have several features that allow you to track your trophy progress, navigate to aspects of the game such as multiplayer or challenge mode, view your score, or perhaps get news from the developer. You can also watch a live stream of your friend’s match in picture-in-picture mode.
Maps are available as you delve into the game information subtly displayed on the main screen. The map is available as a flashing map when you can press the numeric keypad or drag the mouse with the analog stick. This way you don’t have to go to the game’s main menu or a specific mode to know what’s going on. They are useful for players with disabilities, as supported games have tip videos to help you tackle certain challenges or find the last collectible item.
The look of the user interface takes the groups and other social features of the PS4’s predecessor and makes sharing videos easy. You can go directly from the menu to the game your friends are playing, or invite them into large groups. Sharing videos on PS5 works the same way as on PS4. But the preview feature in Maps is great.
As for social features, if you’re tired of typing messages with the D-pad or analog stick, the PS5 offers support for dictating messages with the controller’s built-in DualSense microphone. Since dictation accuracy can vary (as with all speech recognition software), this can be useful when you want to quickly send a message to a friend.

You can choose system settings for certain aspects of the PS5, such as the desired difficulty level or inverting the x or y axis on the controller during games. You can also choose which graphics mode is automatically selected in games: Performance or Resolution. Exploring the PlayStation 5 interface is relatively easy. It’s somewhat similar to the PS4 user interface, but it’s a bit cleaner and clearer.
PlayStation has two services you can subscribe to: PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus. These two subscription services have the same pricing model. For example, you can pay $9.99 per month, $24.99 for three months or $59.99 per year. You will pay $119.98 for a one-year subscription to both services. It may sound expensive, but the services you get are worth it.
A subscription to PS Now is not mandatory, but it’s an incredible service, especially if you didn’t like the classic PS4. Clearly, the performance of the visuals from the first wave of games will be compromised. The PS5 is typically 2160p and 60fps, and feeds a compatible 4K HDR TV. Miles Morales, for example, offers two graphics modes. One includes ray tracing, enhanced lighting, additional visual effects and 4K resolution, but only at 30 frames per second. The other can reach 4K, but actively adjusts the resolution to the scene. It also reduces ray tracing at a constant rate of 60 frames per second.

It’s true, the loyalty rule is liberal, especially in an open game like this. It just makes a strong impression. Perhaps first-person shooters and driving games would benefit from better framing.
The PS5 also supports 120fps, but would only be available in games like Dirt 5. But the PS5 version of the game is not available yet, so no comment. In fact, it works at 1080p if you want to increase the frame rate to these extremes. The internals will make a big difference for PS4 games that are specially customized, like Days Gone. It runs at full speed in 4K and 60fps on the PS5 and looks great.
What about 8K? With the compatibility added on the box, it will be years before we have games with 8K. But it is possible that we will see video content in 8K very soon, but that remains to be seen. With HDMI 2.1, the console is ready for 8K, but it may be some time before this is tested.

The large central touchpad on the PS5 is more unique than the DualShock controller on the PS4 and can provide additional features useful in games and applications. A power connector (USB-C) is located on the back of the controller. It is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
But some things don’t seem quite right. The options and share buttons are small, and the options button, which should normally provide context-sensitive options regardless of where you normally are, does nothing. The PlayStation button at the bottom of the controller is not round, compared to the button on the PS4 version. Instead, it is a cut-out PlayStation logo that is harder to touch. By default, the bottom line of the options menu is displayed instead of going back to the home screen.
This is a big difference from the behavior of the PS4. The home button is located above the small button that allows the built-in microphone to be turned on and off, and it is unfortunately easy to press it while the home button is set incorrectly.

If you’ve never owned a PlayStation console, it’s worth buying a PS5. In addition to the PS Now and PS Plus subscriptions, you’ll have your choice of a large number of games. However, if you already have a PS4 or other gaming PC, you may have to wait a little longer, especially if you don’t want to play Astro’s Playroom or Demon’s Souls.
